My family of 3 will be visiting my son who has a UK passport but also a Single Entry visa for 1 year in Japan and. resident's card because he is a student studying at a University. Is it true that we can not buy a JR pass for him? If the 3 of us buy JR passes do we then have to buy individual tickets for him (which will be much more expensive) or can he buy a different type of pass? Can we book seats on the trains all together when we get to Japan?

Hi there,
Your son is not eligible for the JR Pass because he holds a Student Visa. The pass requires Temporary Visitor status, so he will need to purchase individual tickets for his travel.
The good news is that you can book seats all together at JR stations in Japan.
I hope this helps!
Kind Regards,
Mariko
